2025 TEAM ONTARIO TARGETED SUPPORT program

Through the support of a daily training environment (DTE) with a personal team coach and an Integrated Support Team (IST), the Team Ontario OHPSI (Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative) Program exists to assist the development of two specifically targeted areas of the Canadian beach development pathway towards future Olympic games.

  1.  The development of committed partnerships.

    • Teams that demonstrate the commitment to train for future Age Division World Championships, NORCECA Continental, or FIVB World Tour beach events.

  2. The development of future international blockers or universal defenders.

    • Athletes that are a prospective international blocker/universal athlete interested in exploring high performance beach volleyball in a highly supported holistic environment.

The main objective of the Team Ontario Targeted Support Program is to provide and optimize the physical and mental preparation of committed athletes by following a well-prepared season plan developed in collaboration with integrated support team.

This program is supported and funded by the Canadian Sports Institute of Ontario (CSIO) through the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI).

The Team Ontario Beach Integrated Support Team (IST) consists of:

  • Strength & Conditioning (Matt Golas, CSCS)

  • Sports Dietician - CSIO

  • Athletic Therapist (Alice Sobiesiak, RMT, CAT(C))

  • Medical Team - CSIO

  • OHPSI Team Coach (Angie Shen, ChPC, Eddie Coleman, ChPC)

ATHLETE ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION

  • Athletes must demonstrate the habits to transition towards a Train to Compete developmental stage. (International Competition, USPORT/NCAA Varsity, Canada Games)

  • Athletes must demonstrate a competition plan conducive to age of development that provides the experience towards transitioning towards a Train to Compete developmental level

  • Athletes must have the intentions to meet the mandate of the OHPSI program above.

  • Program support is for teams not already receiving any support/training in other environments.

  • Athletes can apply as an Targeted Support Team or as an Targeted Support Tall Maple

Targeted support Teams:

  • Athletes eligible for 2025 Canada Games 20 years and under (born 2005 and later)

  • Targeted Teams are defined by partnerships that are committed to playing with just each other for the whole season.

  • Teams will engage in a planning process with the support of an Team Ontario teams coach to create a season plan that must include an out of province competition.

Targeted support Tall Maples

  • 19 years and up (born 2006 and earlier)

  • Athletes that meet the below minimum physical criteria and may or may not have experience in beach volleyball but do have a Train to Compete development level in indoor volleyball.

  • Females 180cm (5’11”)

  • Males 193cm (6’4”)

application process:

  • Applications are now being accepted until Friday April 25, 2025, with on-going identification

  • Notifications of 1st intake will be sent out by May 2nd, 2025

  • Notifications of 2nd intake will be sent out the week of May 12th, 2025, after VC Next Gen selections and upon review of application package by Targeted Support evaluation committee.

  • Program Subsidized Support Cost: $995 plus HST per athlete

Training Program & Support

  • May 5 - August 31, 2025

  • Training location at Ashbridge’s Bay & Volleyball Canada’s Beach High Performance Facility

  • Training Plan:

    • Weekly training overseen by Targeted Support Team coach 4-5 days per week.

    • Training collaboration with Volleyball Canada Next Gen as appropriate

    • Strength & Conditioning program with 2-3 lead sessions/week with Team Ontario S&C coach

    • Team Nutrition, Physio, & Performance support for the season

    • Demonstrated dedication to preparation as a team towards highlight events

  • Athletes will compete in and be supported by an Targeted Support team coach for required trials.

  • Program Subsidized Support Cost: $995 plus HST per athlete

    • Developed in collaboration with an OHPSI personal team coach, competition plans include the preparation and participation of development appropriate selection/trials/competitions.

      • May 24/25 – FISU World University Games trials

      • May 31/June 1 – Junior Pan Am Games trials

      • June 7/8 – U21 WCH qualification trials

      • June 21/22 – Toronto Grand Slam

      • July 5/6 – NORCECA Open trials

      • July 5/6 – U18 World Championship Qualification Trials

      • July 11/13 – Vancouver Open/16U

      • July 19/20 – Calgary Open

      • August 2/3 – Ontario Championships – Adult

      • August 9/10 – Ontario Championships – Youth Open (if eligible)

      • August 15/17 – National Championships

      • August 9/23 – Junior Pan Am Games (if eligible)

      • September 16/21 – U21 World Championships (if eligible)

      • TBD – Eligible NORCECA Continental Events

      • TBD – Eligible FIVB Future/Challenge Events

    • Above listed competition & training camp costs are separate from OHPSI Targeted Support Program costs.

ADDITIONAL FUNDING

  • Athletes who earn the opportunity to represent Canada at select NORCECA &/or FIVB key events will have expenses covered for a Targeted Support Team coach to attend.

  • Identified teams can also apply for a Beach Team Funding Grant to have additional financial support to cover eligible training and competition costs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • This program is only available to support athletes who do not already have a daily training environment and integrated support team.

  • The program is looking to support 1-2 teams per gender; however, teams must meet minimum requirements demonstrating progression into Train to Compete (T2C) development characteristics that meet the mandate of the OHPSI program to be eligible for Targeted Support teams’ support. There will not be a minimum # of teams chosen.
